WAPO/ABC POLL: MITT ROMNEY SURGES BACK INTO LEAD

Mitt Romney

Republican nominee Mitt Romney flew back into the lead in the Washington Post/ABC News tracking poll Friday. He now leads President Barack Obama 49-48, a flip from Thursday's 49-48 Obama lead.

This tracking poll has been extremely close as of late. As the Post notes, it's the eighth consecutive day with both candidates at either 49 or 48 percent. The poll comes after Obama had pulled into a tie in the Ramussen daily tracking poll, a survey in which he had been reliably trailing lately.

A few interesting internal numbers from the poll:

  • Obama's approval rating stands at an even 50 percent, right at the "safe" level that typically precedes an incumbent's re-election.
  • Just 43 percent of likely voters say the country is on the right track, compared with 55 percent who think it's on the wrong track. Among independents, it's an even worse 38-59 split.
  • Romney leads, 50-46, on handling the economy.
  • Obama leads, 50-45, on having an understanding of people's economic problems.
  • Obama, surprisingly, has the enthusiasm edge. Sixty-six percent of his supporters say they're "very enthusiastic" — only 62 percent say the same for Romney.
