Orders for factory goods rose 2.8 percent in July versus economists' consensus expectations of 2.0 percent and last month's decline in orders of 0.5 percent.
Ex-transports, factory orders were up 0.7 percent.
Durables orders rose 4.1 percent while non-durables expanded 1.6 percent.
Non-defense, ex-air capital goods orders fell 4 percent.
